East Iceland Nature Research Centre was founded at Neskaupstaður June 25 1995 and is a cornerstone Institution for the study and conservation of nature and the environment in East Iceland.  The Institute has broad role as outlined by Icelandic laws and regulations.

The mission of the Institute is to:

Collect and preserve references on nature and conduct natural research with emphasis on East Iceland and its unique natural surroundings.
Promote conservation of nature, sustainable land use and environmental education.
Provide professional assistance to exhibitions on nature and environment in the area.
Provide education and consulting to nature conservation committees in East Iceland.
Provide environmental consulting, research and monitoring for government municipalities, institutions, industry and individuals.
Provide conservation monitoring of nature in the East Iceland as defined by Icelandic conservation laws.
Monitor and conduct research on the Icelandic reindeer population

East Iceland Nature Research Centre works on diverse commercial and noncommercial projects around Iceland and in the east.
Projects include:
Reindeer monitoring and research.
Environmental education projects for schools and public.
Environmental projects and consulting for municipalities, especially for agenda 21.
Vegetation research.
Bird research.
Environmental assessment and monitoring for government and industry.
Development and maintenance of the Natural History Museum in Neskaupstaður.

The institute has two offices: The main office is at Neskaupstaður at the education and research cluster Búland. The outpost office is at Egilsstaðir.
